NURSES perform almost 90% of health care in the country, a health official says.

National Capital District health services director Dr Jerry Tanumei said: “Their contribution in the development of the country’s health and welfare is significant in both rural and urban areas. Thus, it is important we recognise their time and effort.”

Tanumei received K4,000 from PNG Power Ltd to sponsor 12 nurses and a doctor from National Capital District for the Nurses Association symposium in Mendi next week.

“The PNG nurses symposium as well as the medical symposium held last month provide an avenue for the medical fraternity to develop and enhance their skills,” he said.

“The nursing profession alone has diversified overtime. A lot of them have gone into management and academia, which is an example of development.”

PNG Power Ltd Health Services team leader Dii Kamiso said PNG Power ensured health and safety for its employees and visitors.
