FIVE people died and more than 50 people injured when a dump truck owned by Vanimo Forest rolled in Vanimo, West Sepik, on Friday.
Provincial administrator Conrad Tilau confirmed the accident happened in the early hours of Friday.
“The truck was transporting about 60 people from the company’s base to Vanimo when it tipped,” he said.
Tilau said the cause of the accident was unknown but speculation was that the driver had lost control of the vehicle.
Provincial police commander Moses Ibsogi said the accident was among the worst road accidents in the province.
“Four females were confirmed dead at the scene, one boy died on arrival at Vanimo General Hospital,” Ibsogi said.
“More than 50 victims, including two babies that suffered head injuries, were taken to Vanimo General Hospital.”
The hospital said five were taken to the morgue, 33 people were receiving treatment and 20 were treated and discharged on Saturday.
