MINISTER for Tourism, Arts and Culture Isi Henry Leonard says emphasis must be placed on promoting local tourism during the period of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Leonard said this in response to questions about the status of the industry with the Covid-19 pandemic still a concern.
He urged citizens and the business community to make use of the opportunity to promote tourism and hospitality in their provinces and districts.
“We are all aware of the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic and PNG is not immune, it has affected the industry, especially international tourism,” he said.
“Our local tourists are also affected but not to an extreme extent, so I see that there is an opportunity.
“Given the challenge, we should now re-orient how we promote and do tourism in the country.
“We should focus in local tourism.”
Leonard said there was plan in place to align tourism in the country after the Covid-19 experience.
He said road mapping should now provide the way in which PNG should do tourism and rise up.
