ONE-TIME Rabaul Gurias five-eighth Wesley Batari has found a home in the Mendi Muruks squad as he prepares to face his former teammates in Kokopo on Saturday.
The Gurias’ acquisition of Papua New Guinea international Watson Boas and former Central Dabari Allan Simbiri saw the youngster look elsewhere to continue his career.
Batari, who partnered Hela Wigmen recruit Solomon Pokari in the Gurias halves last year, said he was grateful for the experience he had gained in 2019.
“It was great playing alongside Pokari,” he said.
“With our halves pairing, we reached last year’s semifinals.”
Batari, who joined the Muruks two weeks ago, said he was now focused on helping the second-placed side cement their spot in the top-six ahead of the playoffs.
“Training with the Muruks has been great so far,” he said.
“There’s nothing new.
“I just have to improve my communication with the rest of the team.”
Batari’s inclusion in the Muruks will help boost their backline as they look to take advantage of their mobile pack.
He came off the bench in the Muruks’ 16-14 round-six win over hosts Central Dabaris at Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby on Sunday.
“I’m happy to be given this opportunity by the Muruks to help our halves,” Batari said.
“I will put my best foot forward alongside the rest of the squad.
“Hopefully, we make the finals this season.
“That is my goal.”
Saturday’s match at Kalabond Oval (2pm kick-off) will be the Gurias’ first home game of the season.
