FREE junior tennis coaching is offered every Sunday at the Lae Chinese Club tennis court, according to an official.
President Glenn Cabasug said they resumed free junior coaching on April 10 after receiving approval to resume activities of his Lae Tennis Club.
“Big thanks to Barbara Stubbings from PNG Tennis for requesting and obtaining approval for tennis programmes to be resume nationwide,” he said.
“Coaching is on every Sundays, due to the courts being used by Netball on Saturdays.
“From 3.30pm to 4.30pm is for our red and orange ball levels (younger and beginner levels).
“From 4.30pm to 5.30pm is for our green ball level (older and more advanced level).
“We’re averaging more than 20 children every Sunday, with new kids and parents joining every session.
“There are about five adults (committee members and parents) who voluntarily coach the children.”
Cabasug said the club was arranging for a coach from Port Moresby to assist on a long-term basis in Lae, so that junior coaching sessions would be offered seven days a week, and could be extended to other club venues and schools.
“We intend to have our own age-group tournaments in the coming months, and encourage more juniors to play in our senior tournaments to further improve their skills,” he said.
“We also intend to develop our Lae juniors to advanced levels to be able to represent Lae in Port Moresby tournaments. Hopefully, in the near future, some of them will be selected to represent PNG.”
