Tennis tourney returns to Morobe capital

AFTER almost two decades of no tennis tournaments in the Morobe capital, this weekend will see for the first time the hosting of a singles tourney hosted by the Lae Tennis Club.
Club president Glenn Cabasug told The National that the Panamex Tennis Singles Open was the first singles tennis tournament (knockout draw) in Lae in more than 20 years.
He said the tournament was scheduled for this weekend at the Lae Golf Club.
Cabasug said initially intended for Lae Tennis Club players, they had extended an invitation to players around the country.
Cabasug said five main events would be offered at the tournament which were the open division, women’s open, Under-19 boys, Under-19 girls and masters 50-plus.
“We have intentionally named the main event as open and not men’s open to allow for women to also compete,” he said.
“All draws will have the standard main draw and plate draw as consolation for those who lose their first matches.”
“Matches will start from Friday evening, Saturday morning to evening, and on Sunday morning with the finals in the afternoon.
“A player can participate in a maximum of two events whilst the juniors are free.”
