THE future for Papua New Guinea volleyball stars is getting into shape following the introduction of the four-day school holiday beach and indoor volleyball junior trials in Port Moresby.
The Papua New Guinea Volleyball Federation (PNGVF) has introduced the junior training and trials programme to identify and scout talented juniors.
Over the four days of the programme, two juniors, 16-year-old Ila Wally and 17-year-old Rarua Mana, both from Central, have been identified.
“My dream is to be in the Amoa PNG squad,” Wally told The National.
“I want to represent PNG in volleyball. I want to represent my country at the international stage one day but I have to start from the bottom up.
“I am currently in the PNG U19 team so this trials is a chance for me to keep my form and fitness. I am training and trialing for both indoor and beach volleyball.
“It all now depends on the selection team. If they select me in indoor or beach, I will accept it. I am looking forward to more opportunities.
Meanwhile, Mana said he had a huge interest to take up volleyball.
“That’s the whole reason why I am here, giving it a try to see where I can go. I used to play in the village competition with the Poreporena Amateur Volleyball Association.”
