GAZELLE district in East New Britain has allocated K1.5 million to 61 primary schools to renovate their infrastructure.

District education officer Panuel Luana said it was part of the district improvement initiative programme towards education in the schools.

He said most of the schools had not received any financial assistance to renovate their buildings in the past 10 years.

Luana said the programme last year allocated K1 million to some schools from the rehabilitation of education sector infrastructure (Resi) programme.

“The programme must continue so that we can fully maintain existing schools infrastructure especially on those that have deteriorated over the years,” he said.

Luana said each school would receive K88 per child from this fund.

“After this programme, many schools will receive a face-lift on their infrastructure,” he said.

The two vocational schools in the district – Kabaira and Raval – will receive K100,000 each. They will have to provide a maintenance programme.

Utmei Secondary School will receive K200,000 while Vuvu Secondary will get K100,000 from another K2 million allocated under the district improvement initiative programme (DIIP).

Luana stressed that primary schools must submit their acquittals from last year’s Resi programme to benefit from the DIIP programme.

Elementary schools in the district will each receive K100,000 for their development projects.
