SOLID fielding helped Gazelle Team One retain second spot on the ladder with a 20-12 win over Aviat Jets in round six of the Port Moresby Women’s Softball Association competition at the Bisini Diamonds on Saturday.
Gazelle pitchers Aida Pondriket and Navasha Pilak restricted Jets to just two runs through Collin Eriva and Nasain Taralulu at the top of the first inning.
Gazelle took a dominating lead at the bottom of the inning with Carol Telinga and Geraldine Magaru leading the runs.
But solid fielding by Jets saw Gazelle record just six runs in the second inning.
Through Lydia Evesa and Noela Rasiat, Jets mounted a challenge in the third inning and recorded 10 runs. However, Gazelle’s dominant start was enough to see them claim the win.
Gazelle coach Albert Jerry told The National that it was an important win for his side, who are behind defending champions United Sisters.
“It’s great to be in this position,” he said.
“We’ve been committed to training and our playing style.
“Unfortunately, for Aviat, it wasn’t their day.
“I think we did our part in maintaining the upper hand throughout the match.
“We’ve been training and working closely with our catcher and pitchers which paid off in the match.
“We’ve improved in our batting game, so that’s a bonus for us moving forward.”
