THE Gerehu Magpies edged out a fast finishing Lamana Dockers 3.5 (23) to 2.0 (12) in the women’s AFL grand final at the Murray Barracks Oval on Saturday.

The Pies kept the Dockers scoreless until the last quarter when the wind aided efforts saw the wharfies score two quick goals.

The Pies sensing defeat, tightened up on their defence and kept the wharfies from progressing any further until the final siren.

Coach Dr Alphonse Gelu attributed the victory to the commitment the girls have shown throughout the season to remain dominant over other teams.

“I’m happy for the girls for the common interest and commitment they shown to learn the skills of AFL under my coaching. The commitment paid off and we got the reward,” Gelu said.

The victory sees the Magpies to bag their first title after four years of hunting.
