GEREKA village outside Port Moresby came alive with the annual Christmas touch football competition which started on Thursday and ended on Saturday.
Defending champions Hillside Panthers took out the top prize, winning K1000 in beating KMK 3-2 in the grand final.
Community leader and tournament official Peter Keneke commended the 14 participating teams for their good behaviour and positive spirit of the games.
“It was again a trouble-free Christmas tournament that saw all members of the community celebrate in good fashion,” Keneke said.
“We originally scheduled the games to run for four days, however due to a proper organisation from the committee, we completed all games within three days. “Unfortunately this year we couldn’t host games for the womenfolk due to lack of funding from other sources.
“We were very lucky to secure sponsorship from Ma’a Keneke and his family, and I thank them.
“This year our Gereka touch tournament also saw a team from Gaire taking part which was something positive for us. They were very pleased to see such a tournament that promotes the true spirit of sportsmanship during this festive season.”
Other teams that received prize money included Waga Hot which finished third and got K700, Outlaws finished fourth and got K600 while D-Max finished fifth and got K500.
Keneke hopes that they will make the Gereka Christmas games bigger and better next year.
