A PARA-athlete from Western Highlands, who won gold at the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby, is concerned after not being selected for July’s South Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa.
Sent Anis, who represented the country in the javelin, said he was dropped from the national squad.
“I’m the defending champion and title holder,” Anis said.
“I need to be included in the national squad to go and defend my title.
He said the selected athletes were already in training for the Pacific Games in Samoa.
“I do not know why I was dropped from the training along with other athletes.”
Anis said Team Western Highlands did not take part in the 2017 PNG Games in Kimbe due to a lack of funding from the provincial government.
Anis said that did not prevent many athletes from the province who took part in the 2015 Games in Port Moresby and won gold medals from going out and defend their titles.
“It’s a big slap on my face because I trained at home for this game in Samoa and when I was dropped from the train-on squad, I really felt bad,” he said.
Anis said he had high expectations to represent his country in Samoa and defend his title but was resigned to the fact that it would not happen.
Anis said the disappointment of missing out on the Pacific Games would not stop him from training and focusing on next year’s PNG Games in Southern Highlands.
