Morobe Governor Ginson Saonu on Saturday broke ground to mark the beginning of a new primary school in the Buang local level government (LLG).
Saonu was accompanied by Buang LLG ward councilor Tali George, provincial education minister and Sialum LLG president Bobby Tobby, Buang LLG president and provincial investment chairman Yang Napo to witness the occasion at Bapa village of ward 18, Buang LLG.
Bapa Elementary School will now be elevated to primary school status this year with a commitment of a new double story classroom to be built on the school’s existing site.
“Under my leadership, it is our main aim to develop education institutions in the province and Bapa Elementary School is the first of such occasions to follow through,” Saonu said.
The governor said the ground breaking ceremony signified the commitment to follow through with construction of the new classroom.
Saonu noted the struggles children of wards 18 to 20 had to endure walking many kilometres and over mountains to attend the nearest primary school.
“This will be a thing of the past for the children of these three wards, they will now attend Bapa Primary School,” he said.
“There are two other primary schools to be elevated under my leadership this year as well. One in Nawaeb and Finschhafen districts.
“Education under my government is a priority and I will address areas to be intervened in to improve the quality of education.”
Saonu said his government would also focus on the 3-6 education reform system from early childhood learning up to tertiary level.
He said work on other education institutions across the districts of Morobe would take place this year.
