WEST New Britain Governor Sasindran Muthuvel says there should be more support for churches.
“We are now experiencing some of the worst decline of our morals and ethics in the country, especially in regard to what happened on ‘Black Wednesday’,” he said.
“Churches play an important role in guiding our moral values and should be supported to help our people.
“The church is a uniting factor that can help address this issue.”
Former prime minister Peter O’Neill said the Government should be grateful for the help and support from churches and in return the Government should provide more support for churches.
Muthuvel spoke during presentation of K100,000 from his provincial government on Sunday to the Valoka Catholic church for its 100-year anniversary celebrations scheduled for October.
“The Catholic church has helped the government in many areas such as health and education,” he said.
“We will also have to build some permanent infrastructure to support them.
“On behalf of the province, I thank the Catholic church for all the work they have done here.
“The decline of the church will lead to the decline of the country.
“We must all make changes for the better as we cannot give up on our moral values.
“I urge all parents to teach their children about the church when they are young.
“I wish you all success in the centenary celebrations.”
Hoskins local level government president Roderick Bibilo thanked the provincial government for the financial assistance.
“The Catholic church has helped bring peace in the communities since its establishment here 100 years ago and still continues to play a role in the wellbeing of families.
“We have to support the church because of the good work they do,” he said.
