Governor’s Cup off, says official

THE National Capital District Governor’s Office says it has distanced itself from the Governor’s Cup after its direction to call off the tournament “fell on deaf ears”.
Responding to a news report that Morata Rugby League officials had launched the Governor’s Cup, project manager John Makop said in a statement that since the “acquittals from previous sponsorships were messy”, the cup would be properly factored into the year plan of the National Capital District Commission’s sports desk.
“There is friction between two factions who are bidding to manage the tournament,” he said.
“I relayed the direction from our governor that he had instructed me to call the tournament off. However, I learnt that it went ahead, defying the direction.
“If they still want to go ahead, then let them do so.
“Our position is very clear.
“We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.
“We cannot do much. We urge the officials and the teams to bear with us. We do not want to add fuel to the flame.”
Makop said the ordinary way of organising the tournament should be done away, adding they were planning for a much bigger and better one next year.
Makop said that meant city residents would enjoy professional games with police presence, a proper venue, team insurance cover, marshals, entertainment, paramedics and player medical certification.
He said the office was drawing a fine line to tell spectators and participating teams that they would not be blamed should there be any problem encountered during the tournament.
