THE National Capital District Governor’s Cup playoffs are expected to start today following the completion of pool matches yesterday.
Tournament director Simon Nuabo confirmed that matches in Kaugere and Hohola had ended with playoffs and finals scheduled for today.
He said the pool matches over the past four days saw talented teams compete among each other for the right to progress into the playoffs.
“The players competing in the Governor’s Cup are capable of playing in the Digicel Cup,” Nuabo told The National.
“They can play at the top level but the problem is that we have yet to create space for them to showcase their talent and that’s why we’re running this tournament over the festive period.
“We have players from the Port Moresby Rugby Football League, Moresby South Rugby League and Motu-Koitabu Rugby League and other leagues competing in the tournament and bringing their communities together.”
He said the Governor’s Cup in past years was hosted through local leagues which was a challenge but with the support of the Office of the Governor this year, the tournament had flourished.
Nuabo said there was a possibility of a train-on squad being selected after the tournament to have a pre-season trial match with Digicel Cup side Port Moresby Vipers early next year.
