Junior Sigit says he feels privileged to play for newcomers Vitiaz United after two straight wins to kick off their Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League campaign.
The 23-year-old, from Rai Coast, Madang, started his football career while attending Taraka Primary School in Lae.
As a Grade 6 student in 2013, he represented Taraka’s Under-19 side in the Lae schools competition.
After completing primary school, he went to Saint Francis Technical College where his love for soccer grew.
His passion and talent saw him play for Lae Unitech.
Sigit moved to Port Moresby at the beginning of the year and played for Vitiaz’s feeder club.
Again, his talent and passion helped earn him a spot in the NSL side for this season.
His involvement in the team saw him become one of the most integral players as a midfielder for Vitiaz.
Over the past two rounds, his ball distribution across the park helped create gaps for his strikers to finish off.
When The National asked about what he thought of his side’s 3-1 win over Star Mountain on Dec 21, Sigit said: “It was a tough encounter.
“We were locked 1-1 at halftime but an own-goal from None Simon gave us the upper hand.
“The own-goal left them feeling deflated.
“We capitalised on that to take the lead.
“A final goal from Russell (Nirik) pushed us out to 3-1 lead which we saw out for the win.
“If it wasn’t for the own-goal, it could’ve been anybody’s game.
“Our first game against Morobe United was also tough but we managed grind out a 2-1 win.
“It was our morale-boosting win, considering we are newcomers of the competition.”
But Sigit stressed that they were not getting carried away after their perfect start.
