A MAJOR producer of African yams in PNG will showcase its produce last this month.

RemdiI Milimba Cooperative Society of Western Highlands will display its harvest at the National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) on June 27 in Lae, Morobe.

Chairman Yomas Dosung said that members of their cooperative society were arranging to transport their harvest to Lae.

“The show case day is held annually and that is where we the members of the cooperative will be taking part to display our yam,” he said.

“Under the cooperative society this is our first crop that we are harvesting.”

Dosung said the African yam was newly introduced and their cooperative was one of the first groups to plant and harvest the crop.

“It is drought resistance and will grow from any sizes,” he said.

“This harvest now is mainly for the show case at a venue where many farmers will attend.”

He said their cooperative society would also train farmers who wanted to plant African yams.

“I’m calling on the youths and elderly people not to waste their time doing nothing here but involve in farming activities.

“These will create a better life. And if you are interested to plant the African yam, then you can come so that we will teach you the skills,” Dosung said.

He added that their members were seeking assistance to transport their produce to Lae for the show at NARI.
