A GROUP of people in Jiwaka is educating community members on how to get involved in farming activities, maintaining feeder roads and providing library books for schools.

The Avi 144 United Association in the Anglimp-South Waghi electorate also plans to establish an elementary school at Avi and build bridges over creeks regularly crossed by locals.

Association president David Abel said the aim was to change the community and the people.

He said the people would only change when they saw development taking place.

He said the majority of people were youths involved in all sorts of bad activities and destroying their lives.

“The association is engaging more than 300 youths to work on the fish pond and piggery projects,” he said.

Abel said they had provided reading books to schools.

They have made a submission to the Western Highlands provincial education division to have an elementary school. Classrooms are half-complete.

“We must not wait on the government to do everything for us but try to do something to help us,” Abel said.

Abel said they were into many projects such as farming, road and bridge construction.

“Most of our members are youths and they are drug addicts or home brew consumers and this are some of the ways that can help them.

“We are targeting such group of people to get them involved in such activities,” he said.
