KUIMA Security Service mounted officers at the University of Technology main campus in Lae apprehended a man with a modified .22 calibre gun which he had fired at them last Friday.
The pistol was used in an armed robbery of some female student athletes who were competitors in last week’s University Games.
Kuima commanding officer Martin Temai said that the man and two accomplices had entered the campus from bushes near the Unitech market.
“They held some female students along the street and stole their belongings worth around K1,500,” he said.
He said they tried to escape back into the bushes when the victims alerted the Unitech police and guards and Kuima Security.
The two mounted guards, Mathew Rocks and Lukas Willie, rounded one armed suspect about 600m away.
Temai said the man aimed the gun at Rocks but slipped and fell, firing into the air.
He was arrested and taken to the Unitech police station.
Temai said that police have charged Zirung John, 22, of Pindiu in the Finschhafen district of Morobe with being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and armed robbery.
