MORE than 20 members of the Tru Warrior HIV/AIDS group in Mt Hagen have been carrying out election awareness programme for 58 council wards in Western Highlands.

The council wards were from the Upper Nebliyer and Upper and Lower Kagul areas in the Tambul-Nebilyer electorate.

The awareness programme was sponsored by the Electoral Commission to prepare people for the LLG elections.

The awareness was based on the Limited Preferential Voting system, good governance, rights of women and disabled people during elections.

The people were also warned about the spread of HIV/AIDS during the election period.

The Tru Warrior theatre group was also present to entertain the crowd with dramas.

President of the Tru Warrior group Steven Taka said the awareness was to teach people on how to take part in a election peacefully.

He said the awareness was also to address bribery and hijacking of the election process.

Taka said the 2013 LLG election was very important because the national government would give direct funding to each LLG.

“I believe that with the new reform system funds will go directly to the people to benefit,” he said.

Taka said and now it is the people who will decide on what leadership they wanted.

“Election is a time where bribery, corruption and other bad practices take place to break the laws and the normal process of voting for a leader,” Taka said.
