Help for disabled, elderly

THE New Ireland government pension scheme has successfully looked after people living with disabilities (PLWD) and the aged, Governor Sir Julius Chan says.
He said one of his main priorities as governor was to care for PLWD and the aged who had once contributed effectively towards the province’s and the country’s development.
Sir Julius said New Ireland’s pension scheme had succeeded in caring for them as they received money to sustain their living.
He said another significant project he rolled out was his “roof over head” policy that was a housing policy for his people.
Sir Julius was in Goroka for the past three days visiting the University of Goroka and addressed students, staff and management on issues of political governance and building institutions to serve the needs of the people.
Staff and students received Sir Julius as one of the founding fathers of the nation.
Those who spoke included Vice-Chancellor Prof Musawe Sinebare, who hailed Sir Julius for introducing PNG’s currency (kina and toea) and who was instrumental in establishing many institutions in the country.
“Many developments we see and enjoy today came as a result of decisions of great leaders like Sir Julius and the university is grateful to accept this former PM,” Sinebare said.
