A MOTHER from Malala in Madang fell victim to street kids in Madang yesterday when they grabbed her bag containing K8,000 and ran off.
Stella Warengi, 52, travelled to Madang town to deposit her children’s school fees and buy goods for her canteen in the village.
She was sitting at the bus stop when the youths, pretending to be passengers, went up to her, picked her bag and ran away.
“I was lost for words when my bag was taken away,” she said.
“I called out for help stating that the boy took my bag away.
“I am a village woman who worked hard to earn the money to pay for school fees for my kids but I was unfortunate this morning.”
The tearful mother was helped to the police station by Pacific Corporate Security guards on patrol.
The suspects were held up by youths at the Botanical Garden.
Police have arrested four suspects alleged to be involved in the grab-and-run.
Police voiced concern about street vending in the town which they said bred bag-snatchers.
Police officers from the Madang town police station called on the town council and the town authority to do something about street vendors to allow mothers from the village to travel freely and safely.
