HENGANOFI district development authority has begun a major upgrade of Dunantina Valley Road to connect Ramu in Madang.
Work has started from Kugumo section near Dirty Wara section of the Highlands Highway.
“I have engaged plant and equipment of Henganofi district to start on the 60km Dunantina Road to link up with Ramu in Madang,” said Henganofi MP Robert Atiyafa.
“This is to open up access for the people and create an alternate highway for Madang and Ramu travellers.”
He said a stretch of 35km was an existing road needing upgrade and 25km would be new.
It will be 12 metres wide with four metres of line drainage, two metres on each side.
“I want the road to be upgraded and constructed to meet requirements of the Government. I also want to secure additional funding to build a 100 metre bridge across the Ramu River, all in this term of Parliament,” Atiyafa said.
He said a submission would be presented to the National Planning and Monitoring Minister Richard Maru this week for him to make allocations in the national budget next year.
“The construction of the road and upgrade of bridges, including construction of Ramu River Bridge, will be a joint funding exercise by Henganofi DDA and the Government,” Atiyafa said.
He said once the road was completed, he would work with PNG Power Ltd (PPL) to connect electricity along the road to give power to the people. “I will make sure to deliver this road in this term of Parliament to allow people to bring out coffee, garden produce and for efficient flow of education, health and economic activities,” Atiyafa said. “The travel time to Madang will be shortened by two hours once completed.”
Meanwhile, Fayantina Road and Tebega Road is currently undergoing sealing.
