Highway ‘pirates’ warned to stop

POLICE have warned people living along the National Highways, especially in Eastern Highlands, to stop collecting money and setting up roadblocks.
Northern Command Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Peter Guinness said it is a National Government Highway and is open to everyone to travel without any fear and distractions.
Those residing along the main highways cannot be practising illegal activities of collecting fees and trying to own public infrastructures, he said.
“Police highway patrol will start taking tough measures on those who are caught,” he said.
He said it is against the law to take money from people travelling along the highway because it is not a private road.
There has been increased illegal collecting of fees on parts of Highlands Highway.
Setting up roadblocks also causes traffic problems for motorists and makes travelling dangerous, Guinness said.
He said the EHP police commander will have to find out which part of the road people living along are practising this.
