FOLLOWING the planned departure of Andy Bichel as national coach , Cricket PNG, have named a former Australian leg spinner Brad Hogg as the new national coaching director and Greg Campbell as women’s coach.
Cricket PNG chief executive officer Bill Leane said: “Andy Bichel’s departure is something that has been in the planning for nearly six months given his appointment to IPL (Indian Premier League) champions Chennai Super Kings in April. In the world of sports business we simply couldn’t compete,” Leane said.
“Andy’s contribution to cricket in PNG will always be cherished and remembered and our programme has shown that the natural talent in PNG can be maximised with good fundamentals, great consistency and a blend of passion and big game experience we will continue to grow and rival some of the best in the world.”
Under Bichel’s direction the national team is now ranked in the top 10 of associate and affiliate countries in the International Cricket Council.
“We are closing the gap on the test playing nations and our main aim is to play one day international cricket.
“We also need to continue learning the T20 game so a national coach who has played a significant number of ODI (one day international matches) and been to multiple World Cups having just retired is critical to our success,” Leane said.
Cricket PNG chairman Mick Nades announced the appointment of both new coaches.
“We are extremely fortunate to have found our own dynamic duo.
“Today we want to announce former Australian ODI, two-time World Cup winning player and genuinely energetic recently retired Australian Test cricketer Brad Hogg as the new Hebou Barramundis national coach.”
“The second and equally important member of the duo is former Australian Test cricketer Greg Campbell who will take over as coach of the Lewas and also assume an extended role as assistant coach of the men’s team on top of his responsibilities as national operations manager,” Nades said.
