Hold-ups a concern

Letters

AS a result of bad road conditions along the Henganofi to Kainantu sections of the Highlands Highway, armed hold-ups are daily occurrences there.
People passing through this section are stripped off their hard-earned cash, valuables, food and clothes.
At a time when talk of gun control is being addressed in Parliament, this sort of robbery happening randomly is uncalled for.
It is very hard for the Government to control guns – by the
look of events happening around us.
The MPs responsible for these districts – Robert Atiyafa for Henganofi and Johnson Tuke for Kainantu – must use the police force to stop highway robbers.
The perpetrators must feel the wrath of the police force.
PMV windscreens are damaged, passengers beaten, girls and women are raped.
What is happening?
This is also an appeal to the police in Goroka and Kainantu: You have a responsibility to perform.
Please protect the highway from Kassam Pass to Henganofi.
Stop chasing drunkards, street venders, betel nut sellers and innocent people around town.
Take your aggressiveness to where it is most needed.
PMV bus owners must also advise their drivers to travel in convoys.
Take along something to defend themselves as well as the passengers.
If the statutory authorities have the ‘don’t care’ attitude, than it’s ample time self-defence and vigilance come into play.
