DEALING with the production, sale and consumption of the cheap alcohol will take a holistic approach, police say.
NCD Met Supt Gideon Ikumu told The National: “It is not the duty of the police to control how the cheap alcohol is consumed by the public.
“There are regulatory bodies who are responsible, the police are only here to attend to the social problems caused by the consumption of the cheap alcohol.”
Supt Ikumu said the police are law enforcers and their job is to ensure that the public is safe from drunkards.
He added that there are regulating bodies that are responsible for the production and sales of the cheap alcohol.
Supt Ikumu called on the regulatory bodies to help work with police to control the production, sales and consumption of the cheap alcohol.
“I want the regulatory bodies responsible to use their power and help control the production, sales and consumption of the cheap alcohol,” he said.
Supt Ikumu said medical practitioners who provide statistics about the alcohol-related accidents and deaths caused by consuming the cheap alcohol so that the public is aware and take precaution about their physical and mental health.
“From my observation about the cheap alcohol during the festive season, I can say that people are badly affected as they are walking around like zombies,” he said.
