ABOUT 100 homes and a classroom were burnt down in a tribal fight between Torom and Pepla clans of Pingrip village in Upper Mendi, Southern Highlands province, last Sunday.
Southern Highlands provincial police commander Supt Jimmy Onopia said yesterday that the fight was sparked by drunken youths last Saturday.
Supt Onopia said on Sunday morning, the Toroms raided Pepla territory burning down the houses and
an elementary school classroom.
The Peplas retaliated by burning down Torom houses.
Supt Onopia said warriors from the surrounding villages came in with high-powered guns to support their allies but they were turned away by police.
He said one man sustained an arrow wound.
Supt Onopia said the situation was tense and a section of police mobile squad 10 was dispatched to Pingrip
health centre to camp there and to restore peace and order.
