THE Debonah Hornets remain confident they can make the finals of the Gerehu Offseason rugby league after an 18-0 win over Caput Eels on Friday.
The Hornets scored their fourth of the season in the round six fixture at the Gerehu Sports Centre in Port Moresby.
Hornets’ James Gene, Daniel Tali, Aron Mogola and Chris Sammy stood out in securing the victory.
A strong Tali carry paved the way for Gene to go over for an unconverted try three minutes into the game.
Eels had many chances to score but ball handling errors blunted their attack.
Gene crossed for his second try after breaking the line and out-pacing the defence to score for a 10-0 lead at halftime.
The game’s tempo rose in the second half with both sides getting more physical in defence and while the hit-ups kept coming.
The Eels were provided an opportunity close to the Hornets line via a penalty but could not find a way through much to their fans’ disappointment.
Hornets rubbed salt into the wound when Sylvester Ivina knocked over a penalty to extend the lead to 12-0.
Lock Chris Sammy provided the coup de grace when broke through some flimsy defence to score before fulltime.
Hornets coach Junior Yagro said his side reaped the reward of a good week of training and said that kind of commitment was necessary if they wanted to do well in the finals.
“We train from Monday to Friday and the guys all turn up so that commitment is good and it showed on the field today,” Yagro said.
The Hornets have won, drawn and lost in their three matches so far but Yagro said the positive vibe in the team would ensure they were competitive this season.
