THE passing of late Sir Theophilus George Constantinou is a great loss for the Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH), chief executive officer Dr Paki Molumi says.
Molumi said Sir Theo had done tremendous work as chairman of the hospital board from 2013 until his death.
The board and management described Sir Theo as a devoted man who had a passion for making things happen for the hospital and the people of PNG.
Molumi said Sir Theo initiated and founded many projects and had passed at a time when the hospital was undergoing rapid development, but said Sir Theo’s legacy would go on.
“The last time we met was when he came from his sick bed from Sydney in June to see the completion of the catheterisation lab in preparation for the opening,” he said.
“He wanted to transform PMGH into a better hospital so Papua New Guineans did not need to go overseas for treatment.” Molumi said from Sir Theo’s leadership had delivered infrastructure improvements such as renovations to all wards, ensuring a high level of cleanliness, construction of buildings and road repairs, including car parks and IT (information technology) infrastructure for staff.
The Sir Theo Foundation, supported PMGH, by training and recruiting nurses and technical staff, project managers and management staff supporting remunerations.
“Sir Theo did not only put his heart in, but injected personal funds to PMGH to achieve its objectives to be a true level seven teaching and referral hospital,” Molumi said.
He said Sir Theo’s latest achievements before his passing were the purchase of a catheterisation laboratory machine which was serving many Papua New Guineans and the 48-bed palliative care ward for terminal cancer patients which would soon to be opened.
