EIGHT kitchen staff at the new Hela hospital have been trained on how to run the new kitchen facility.
The three men and five women were trained by a qualified chef with the assistance of the Oil Search Foundation on skills required to run the kitchen.
Provincial health authority chief executive officer Dr James Kintwa welcomed the support of the foundation. “The eight cooks received training about food safety systems, personal hygiene, how to clean and maintain kitchen premises, and how to store, cook and serve food,” he said.
“They were also trained on how to use the kitchen equipment in the hospital.
“Our staff should be equipped with the appropriate knowledge and skills so that food is prepared and served under the best hygiene practices.”
Foundation executive director Stephanie Copus-Campbell said empowering the kitchen staff with the skills to operate the new catering facility would assist patient treatment and recovery.
“It will also boost the morale of all staff who will eat healthy and delicious meals in the kitchen’s large and airy dining hall,” she said.
One of the eight cooks, Naomi Angobe, said the modern kitchen required modern knowledge.
“From the training delivered, I can confidently operate the new equipment,” she said.
“I can say that this has boosted our work morale.”
