MORE than 30,000 people living in Manuti and Bushwara in the Moresby North East electorate are looking forward to a road being built for them.
MP John Kaupa said a lot of people had bought land from the customary landowners and were living there.
“People are already living in these areas as our city expands,” he said.
“Before other essential Government services are brought in, we have to build roads in the area that will connect Manuti to Fareya, Bushwara and ATS.
“We will (later) connect utility services such as water and power.”
Kaupa said mini markets, school, health facility and police station would also be built.
He said Port Moresby was facing a rise in urban drift which had put pressure on the Government to provide basic services and address issues relating to over-crowding.
“While people have the right to basic essential services such as education, health, road infrastructure and transportation, overcrowding must be addressed.
“We are looking at proper resettlement of people in the city,” Kaupa said.
“But most of these land are customary-owned. “The indigenous people must have proper benefits when they lease their land or sell it.”
