Housing must be a priority, PM

Letters, Normal

I REFER to a report in your business section  about buying/renting a house.
It seems like all houses in Port Moresby cost more than K2 million, well above the capacity of the majority of the people.
Many of the rental rates I enquired were ridiculously high.
How can the ordinary people afford to pay the weekly rental rate when it is well above what they are earning a fortnight?
It is a shame to see a manager or an engineer renting a room and living there with their entire family.
Does the government have any plans to provide affordable accommodations for its citizens living and working in urban areas?
The NHC is a failed agency and the entire housing ministry staff, from the minister down to the receptionists, should be sacked and replaced with a young team with vision.
The current bunch has let the people of PNG down badly.
Is there a price regulatory body to take control and look into the rental rates quoted by real estate firms and agents?
Even the space under a house has a price!
It is time the government stop serving the interests of foreign investors.
It must give full attention to serving the people of PNG.
We need to hear from PM Sir Michael Somare what his plans to overcome the accommodation problem are.
