ICCC review focuses on postal service market

THE Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC) says it is currently reviewing the country’s postal services focusing on its existing market condition and competition aspects.
Responding to queries from The National, commissioner and chief executive officer Paulus Ain said the ICCC would conduct an industry review consistent with the ICCC Act and the existing regulatory contract (2017-2021) between the Post PNG and ICCC which would expire on Dec 31.
“From this review, focus will be on the existing market condition and competition aspects of the regulated services,” he said.
“As we all know, there is less demand for the usage of the postage stamps and post boxes due to the increase in information and communication technology.
“Post PNG has experienced less revenue streams in these services to date.
“From the review, a decision will be made on the best regulatory approach to use for the regulated services.
“Whether the ICCC continues to play a regulatory oversight over these services or look at other measures such as deregulation of the industry.”
Ain explained that Post PNG, under the existing contract, had the flexibility to set its own prices and provide services without enforcement.
