Increase in sexual abuse of minors concerns top cop

Police Commissioner Gari Baki is not happy with the rise in the number of sexual abuse cases against minors.
Baki told The National on Friday that he was appalled by the increasing number of reports and said he supported the police minister’s decision to increase manpower and provide training for police to address such cases.
“We are now planning on offering training to our officers in the Family and Sexual Violence Unit and Domestic Violence Division,” he said.
“We will be increasing their manpower but police cannot address this by themselves, we need the support of everyone if we are to really address this issue. PNG is a Christian country but all these reports shows the
exact opposite of the Christian principles.
“Children are supposed to be protected and this is so wrong and I condemn these acts.”
Baki called on the media to work with the police to not only report on cases but to inform and educate people on how wrong it is.
He also supported the call made by the NCD Met Supt Perou N’dranou to work with other government departments, churches, non-governmental organisations, the media and members of the community to address the issue.
