Police officers drinking in uniform ‘an embarrassment’

OFFICERS drinking in full police uniform is an embarrassment to the constabulary, Police Comm Gari Baki says.
Baki told The National that it was even more embarrassing when they took a picture of themselves and uploaded it on Facebook where it went viral.
Police Minister Jelta Wong, who was appalled at seeing a picture of police officers in uniform with beer cans in their hands, circulating in Facebook, issued directives for an investigation last week for the officers to be identified and disciplined.
Baki said: “We have already started the investigations and the Western police commander will identify the constables in the picture for disciplinary action to be taken.
“This is not the first time we are taking disciplinary action, many others too for the same reasons and by now officers should know better.
“When at Bomana Police College, they are taught about ethics and they are told to wear their uniform with pride and not drink alcohol in uniform and on duty.
“They know such actions have disciplinary consequences, so they will be disciplined once they are identified.”
The picture of the officers in police uniform was posted on The PNG Police Brutality and Crime–Stop campaign Facebook page and went viral on the country’s social media platform last week.
