AN Indonesian man employed in an oil palm company in East New Britain owned by Gillford PNG Ltd was burnt to death after the house he was living in burnt down.
East New Britain police commander Chief Insp Joseph Tabali told The National in Kokopo yesterday that the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday at the Kangilona camp in Pomio.
Chief Insp Tabali said the deceased, Mohammad Azhar, had been asleep inside the building when it caught fire and was unable to escape.
He said the building, which housed the company’s expatriate workers and an office, was burnt to the ground.
Chief Insp Tabali said properties, including four vehicles, four deep freezers and an undisclosed amount of the company’s money as well as office equipment such as computers and the workers’ personal property were all destroyed in the fire.
He said police officers arrived at the scene later and started to investigate.
“We are trying to establish the cause of the fire as we believe the fire might have started from the electrical fault coming through from the office,” he said.
The deceased employee’s remains were flown to Port Moresby on Monday.
