Investigate complaints

Letters

STUDENTS’ complaints raised in The National on Jan 27, 2020 should be addressed and investigated urgently.
It is a surprise and shame to see many students from the premier institution failing their course in large numbers.
The Department of Higher Education, Research Science and Technology (DHERST) have raised the bar for academic excellence for students entering universities and institutions in the country.
Students who are accepted into higher institutions are selected because of the good academic results and the high grade point average (GPA) they scored and we expect many to perform well.
However, this is not the case, though. Many students have done well with very good results in some subjects whilst many have failed this one particular subject from the IT Department.
I am also a concerned parent with a child who is also affected this year.
I have queried for academic transcripts from the office of the academic registrar and have found out that some course results were not properly updated before being sent to DHERST.
This may have affected many students from the TESAS scholarship.
I am also concerned because parents/guardians are paying a lot of money for boarding/lodging and tuition fees for the children and we expect nothing less but the best from the University of Papua New Guinea.
The UPNG administration should investigate and address this issue promptly and advise the students and parents of the outcomes.
Otherwise it is going to affect many students this year.
I am of the opinion that many affected students are going to raise complaints at the start of the semester this year.
