LOCALS will be given the opportunity to work in the multi-million kina housing project at the 9-Mile Duran Farm outside Port Moresby, according to a builder.
Northbuild Construction PNG Ltd general manager Graham Boddington said nearly 100 per cent of the workforce in the project should be Papua New Guineans.
“Our commitment is 100 per cent of our workforce will be Papua New Guineans,” he said.
“If anyone sees any foreigners driving machines in our jobs, it should be reserved for locals.
“All the supervisors, operators and tradesmen in the project are going to be locals.”
Boddington said the company was awarded the contract of building houses ranging between K250,000 and K300,000 in price.
“We are going to deliver the Australian standard housing at the affordable rate,” he said.
Northbuild is an Australian company based in PNG where it had more than 10 years of experience in the construction and building sector.
Housing Minister Justin Tkatchenko and managing director for National Housing Corporation (NHC) Henry Mokono signed an agreement with the three contractors in Port Moresby this week to begin the work.
Five contractors were engaged to build the houses.
Each would be given more than 500 allotments to develop.
According to the NHC , funds to build houses would be provided by developers who would progress in stages.
Meanwhile, Mokono said some Government departments had shown interest to be allocated 100 allotments.
“The Personnel Management Department has signed with the National Housing Corporation and were allocated 100 allotments,” he said.
