DANIEL Joe will look to begin his reign as Hekari United captain when they host Lae City in the Oceania Football Confederation Champions League national playoff in Port Moresby tomorrow (3pm kick-off).
The defender was appointed to the role following the retirement of long-serving captain Muta.
“It’s a big responsibility, but I’m honoured to take over from David,” Joe said. “We are looking forward to the game on Saturday, the team are excited and ready to face City.”
Papua New Guinea legend Muta said it would be weird to stand on the sideline as the interim coach following a long and colourful career as a midfielder.
“But I’m excited about the new experience,” he said.
“I just want to give something back to football. We’ve worked really hard these past few months.
“City are the National Soccer League champions.
“It’ll be a tough contest, but we’re prepared to do our best.”
City technical adviser Edris Kumbruwah said they had prepared well, knowing that Hekari were fellow football heavyweights in the country.
“All our players are excited and looking forward to play Hekari,” he said. “City and Hekari are the top-two clubs.” City head coach Bob Morris is counting on the experience of goalkeeper Roland Warisan and defenders Alwin and Felix Komolong as well as Philip Steven and Thomas Yagum.
Skipper Emmanuel Simon will look at controlling the midfield alongside Jacob Sabua, Eliude Fugre and Obert Bika while Jonathan Allan pairs up front with recruit Bruce Tiampo. “Stahl Gubag and Emmanuel Airem were ruled out after failing their medical clearance,” Morris said.
“Pala Paul has been left out due to issues around his transfer.
“But I still have enough depth. We are looking forward to a tough clash.”
The winners of the playoff will represent Papua New Guinea in the upcoming Champions League.
