THE national men’s football team will have two international friendly matches in Qatar prior to the World Cup regional qualifiers in March, says head coach Marcos Gusmao.
The Brazilian told The National yesterday that he had planned for his men to face two Asian teams prior to leaving for Qatar, however, due to international travel restrictions, that would not be possible.
“We will play two international friendlies in Qatar since we can’t do it here because of Coronavirus restrictions,” Gusmao said.
The South American said the Papua New Guinea Football Association was yet to finalise arrangements for the matches.
Association general secretary Pius Letenge said: “We want the team to play (international) friendlies before their first match against New Zealand.
“But those arrangements are yet to be confirmed.”
Meanwhile, Gusmao’s men had their second friendly match over the weekend against a youth team since they kicked off an extended camp in Port Moresby earlier this month.
“We had a friendly match over the weekend with an Under-23 team and won 6-0,” he said.
“This time, we played high-level football, but we still need to improve the physical conditioning of the players.
“Next week, we expect to face a stronger team.
“That will be a team made up of National Soccer League players headed by coach Percy Mataio.
“We will have four more local friendlies next month and two in March when we’re in Qatar.
“I’ve made a few changes in the squad to test all the players.
“I replaced some players who were injured.”
When asked about names of the players who were replaced, Gusmao refused to comment, saying the final list for the qualifiers would be announced soon.
“The final list is ready and is with association president John Kapi Natto who will announce the squad soon.”
