Kavieng to host national darts championships

THE Papua New Guinea Darts Federation says Kavieng, New Ireland, will host its national championships in September, with 10 associations so far preparing for the week-long tournament.
It will be Kavieng’s third time to host the championships, having done so in 2004 and 2008.
The championships will be held at Kavieng Club with player registration taking place on Sept 9. Matches will be held from Sept 10-16.
The championships will also see the Sept 12 election of new office bearers to the federation.
So far, the affiliated associations of Gaire, Madang, Kokopo, Kauka, National Capital District (NCD), Ramu, Balus (Air Niugini), Aitape, Tubusereia, Kavieng and Northern’s Higaturu are preparing for the championships.
Each association is allowed a two men’s and two women’s teams. Registration is K200 per team and K50 for each player. The deadline for affiliation of other associations will be on July 31.
This will give ample time for the federation to secure sponsorship for the championships, and allow associations to prepare well.
“We are looking at sponsorship,” federation president John Kuaru said.
“We have had some feedback, but no confirmation yet.
“We would like to have a major sponsor back the federation in making these championships a success.”
Meanwhile, the NCD Darts Association held friendly matches against Kauka Darts Association at Sports Inn on Sunday.
Fielding their best players, Kauka displayed brilliant sportsmanship and skill against NCD’s men’s and women’s train-on squads.
The challenge consisted four men’s and three women’s teams. NCD won all seven matches.
“This is good for the individuals taking part as it gives them some perspective of what to expect in the championships,” Kauka president Madaha Doriga said. It was Kauka’s second invitation to friendly matches, the first being from Porebada.
Kauka will now meet Tubusereia for friendly matches this weekend.
“We have 49 players in our train-on squads,” Doriga said.
“We should name our final squads before July 24.”
