CONVICTED Gulf Governor Havila Kavo must step aside from his role and leadership position as a Governor of Gulf Province to safeguard the integrity of the Office of the Governor of Gulf and the people of Gulf Province.

Kavo knows deep within him that he had been convicted of misappropriating public funds totalling K131, 338 five years ago by the National Court of Justice. He was jailed for 18 months with hard labour but bailed two weeks later and he is awaiting appeal against his conviction. Only last month, he was charged for allegedly misappropriating almost K783, 000 belonging to Gulf Provincial Government while awaiting appeal.

Consequently, he cannot perform his roles and responsibilities with honesty and integrity as agGovernor and speak for the people of Gulf and make any important developmental decisions because of what had transpired.

He has an integrity problem over his leadership and the members of the Gulf Provincial Government which he leads no longer have trust and respect for him. It is only befitting that he relinquish his governorship position to someone who is capable of acting and leading the province into 2017.

Gulf Province needs leaders with honesty and integrity now more than ever to lead to be part of all important decision making processes by O’Neill-Dion Government and joint venture partners in second LNG Project. Gulf Province does not have any leadership representative in the O’Neill-Dion Government.

A leader must represent the interests and aspirations of their people at Government level and joint venture partners decisions on project developments.

All in all, Gulf Province is missing out big time. Time is running out and our leaders cannot continually play politics any longer.  Our people’s lives are at stake and the province’s very important developmental issues must be raised at National Government levels for support and approval.

If our political leaders from Gulf fail to take proactive approach by been part of the Government that is making critical decisions on Elk-Antelope LNG Project and other major developments issues in Gulf without people’s concerns been accommodated by investors and joint venture partners, the people of Gulf Province could miss out big time on business and development opportunities. We need a proactive, purpose-driven, objective and people-oriented acting governor to lead the province immediately.

Hence, Governor Kavo must humble himself and step aside and await a Supreme Court to make determinations on his conviction case. He cannot continue to operate from the office of the Governor of Gulf, until the Supreme Court has made its determinations otherwise.

The office of the Governor belongs to the people of Gulf and its integrity must be upheld at all times regardless of who occupies it.
