Kiribati’s Clark is new PNA boss

KIRIBATI’S Dr Sangaa Clark, who has built a career in management of tuna fisheries, is the new Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA) chief executive officer.
She said the Pacific’s tuna fisheries were the most sustainable in the world but that did not mean they could relax.
“We are facing a whole range of existing and emerging threats, not least of which is from climate change, the warming of oceans and rise in sea levels, so we need to refocus on these new issues and get more of our nationals involved and doing work and support in these areas and in tuna management,” she said.
“The strength of the PNA has always been the willingness of the parties to collaborate and cooperate to make hard decisions in the best interests of the collective group, even if those decisions have an impact on the individual country.”
Clark lives in New Zealand with her husband and family and would take up the post as soon as the Covid-19 travel restrictions permit.
It is understood that outgoing chief executive Ludwig Kumoru will remain in the post until Clark can travel to Majuro, Marshall Island.
Kumoru said working for PNA was one of the best experiences of his life.
“Every day there is a new challenge facing our tuna fishery,” he said.
“I have learnt a lot about managing organisations and the challenges of working with nine countries.”
