Koboni seal victory to break Bomana Cats’ winning momentum

THE Concept Koboni ended the Bomana Cats’ winning run with a 10.8 (68) to 4.2 (26) victory in the Port Moresby Esiloan AFL Premiership yesterday.
The game began strongly with Nason Benjamin dominating the rucking duel to combine with Brendan Beno, Hapeo Bobogi and Alu Paak to set up Ezra Kautu for Koboni’s first six-pointer.
The Cats retaliated with a goal from Kataha Seewee after an elusive run by Kelly Kaugla in the midfield to stay on equal footing with the Demons and go into the first break with a 7-all draw.
Koboni maintain their strong form in the second quarter, adding three goals and three behinds while holding the Cats to a lone behind to hold a 4.4 (28) to 1.2 (8) lead at half-time.
A spray from coach Joe Magio got the Cats back to their game plan in the third quarter to play the ball low and use their speed to gain possession on ground play.
It paid off and the Cats were rewarded with three quick goals.
Sensing danger, Demons coach Overa Gibson quickly made some changes with experienced Michael Macca, Paul Philip and Alphonse Jambarufo taking charge of the backline to shut out the Cats onslaught.
The game swung back in Koboni’s favour, with Benjamin, Steven Ila and Joseph Singura bagging a goal each to take Koboni ahead 7.7 (49) to 4.2 (26) at the third break.
The final quarter all belonged to the Demons as they notched three more goals and a behind to run out the winners while shutting out the Cats completely to a scoreless stanza.
Major goal kickers for Koboni were Douglas Lai Jr (three), Bobogi (two), Kautu, Benjamin, Ila, Joey and Lam Andrew (one each) while Seewee (three) and Gerard Fungke (one) were the Cats goal getters.
In the earlier match yesterday, West Eagles maintained their unbeaten run with a 12.18 (90) to 1.1 (7) flogging of Gereka Bombers.
On Saturday, reigning premiers Lamana Docked showed no mercy for the Gerehu Magpies with a 20.15 (135) 0.3 (3) belting while Gordon Kokofas overpowered North Waigani Royals Tigers 8.8 (56) to 5.3 (33).
