THE Hohola Flies claimed a 14-4 win over Sisters in their round 7 Port Moresby Women’s Rugby League clash at the National Football Stadium last Friday.
The match had proven to be a tough and entertaining one as predicted with one of Flies halfback Cathy Neap distributing the ball well in the first half.
Flies fullback Mala Mark with her speed and handling skills, scored a try and set up another.
The 19-year-old Engan lass was her side’s best on the day.
“I’m happy with the girls’ performance, our defence was okay but we have a problem with our attack because many of our players are still learning the game,” Mark said.
“We will definitely work on our defence but I’m pleased with the overall performance by the girls. We were in seventh place, climbed up to three and hopefully this win would pushes us to second place.”
Mark, who is national representative, also played a leading hand in her side’s win over the Paga Panthers last week.
“Beating Paga last week was a boost for us as we climb the ladder but we will still work hard in the next match.”
Sisters’ Esther Baundo sliced through a gap in the Flies defence to give her side a 4-0 lead but the Hohola women hit back with a converted try to take a 6-4 lead at halftime.
The second half had PNG Orchids and Sisters prop Brenda Goro stood out for her side but even she could not turn the tide as a high error count dogged her side.
Flies scored tries through Neap and Mark for their win.
The day’s best performers were Flies’ Mark and Sisters’ Goro and Samantha Kuman.
“Today was not the best performance from the Sisters,” Goro said.
“We normally defend better but didn’t do that this game allowing the Flies to score in the second half.
“We will definitely work on our defense and come harder the next game.” Results: Paga Panthers 16 Royals 4, Butterflies 22 Magani 0, Dobo Warriors 10 Tarangau 6, West 28 Souths 0.
