DESPITE the challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, an official says the Koiari Rugby League is coping well as the season heads into Sunday’s grand finals.
League vice-president Max Maso told The National yesterday that the challenges came about while attempting to meet the Papua New Guinea Sports Foundation’s back-to-sports policy.
“It was a struggle because when we wanted to start our competition earlier this year, we had to go through a lot to make sure we met the requirements of the ‘new normal,” he said.
“The entire process of getting the league started was a new experience and despite the challenges, we had learned a lot and we’re happy.
“The league has been running well over the past three months.
“Our senior and junior competitions have been running for nine weeks with another two weeks for the playoffs.
“It was quite a challenge but we managed to get things rolling and we now have our top-two teams set for the Under-20 and A-Grade grand finals.
“Despite the Covid-19 situation in the country, sponsors like Eda Ranu and Koitaki Country Club have remained committed and our league has been successful this year.
“We’re also fortunate to receive assistance from the foundation in getting our coaches and players up to speed with the ‘new normal’ for sports.”
Maso hailed the support of Kairuku-Hiri MP Peter Isoaimo and club sponsors for ensuring another successful season.
