THE streets of Kokopo will light up again on Friday after three years of being in the dark. Power was restored and the street lights repaired at a cost of K300,000 funded by the Kokopo development authority (DDA) through its district services improvement programme (DSIP). Kokopo MP Emil Tammur, Raluana local level government (LLG) president Tiolam Wawaga, Kokopo-Vunamami urban LLG and Kokopo mayor Isidor Bonga, Kokopo city manager Freddy Lemeki, Kokopo administrator John Talele, a technical team from both PNG Power Ltd and contractor PawaComtronocs Investment Ltd with administration staff from the district witnessed the commissioning of the city street lights that line the four-lane city road. Tammur said he was relieved to see Kokopo city light up again for the safety and wellbeing of the public.
“The lights along this stretch of road known as William’s Road have been switched off for the past three years due to non-payments of bills as well as damaging of power poles by careless and drunk motorists,” he said. “Kokopo city is the tourism hub for the country. “It also hosts many national and international events and that is why it is very important to immediately light up the city again.
