JUSTICE Minister Bryan Kramer has confirmed that Justice Jim Wala Tamate passed away on Sunday, April 25, after a short illness.
He described Justice Tamate as a man of integrity.
Two other judged passed away recently – Justice Nicholas Kiriwom earlier this month and Justice Regina Sagu last month.
Kramer said he would be speaking to the Judicial and Legal Services Commission and the Department of Justice and Attorney General about the welfare of their members.
“We need to look at an improved workplace health policy which includes annual medical checkups for all staff, preferably for the law and justice sector as a whole,” Kramer said.
“We can also ask members who may have ongoing health conditions (to) consider early retirement which allows them to spend time with their families rather than being in a situation where they are passing away on the job.”
Justice Tamate, from Hula village in Rigo, Central, was appointed to the bench in 2017.
He had been practicing law for 28 years in the offices of the Public Prosecutor and the Public Solicitor.
